PostSubject: The Leaque of Extraordinary Comic Fans: MGH Edition   The Leaque of Extraordinary Comic Fans: MGH Edition Icon_minitimeMon Mar 12, 2012 4:36 pm

Welcome to the tenth version of the Comic Thread in it's various incarnations. In an effort to do our part to keep the board running smoothly and quickly, every so often we reboot continuity and start anew. This is the 10th such thread reboot (and third board version since the original) and we thank you for dropping in.

As thanks and to try to be helpful, many of our Past and present fellow comic fans have made suggestions of a handful of "Must Read" books that I have compiled and listed below. We hope anyone perusing the thread will find this useful. We welcome lists from anyone who regularly drops in.

Done.

Why did you drop Invincible?

I just read Ultimate Collection #7 and enjoyed it. Of course, I only read them in the oversized format and not issue to issue. I could see it being slightly frustrating to read waiting month to month to go through a storyline AND the last half of the book was not as interesting as the first half.

I haven't dropped it exactly. I just haven't read it in so long that I couldn't say that I definitely recommend it up to the most recently released issue.

I'll pick it up again soon, now that I'll no longer be one of the jobless layabouts.

Hmm, I swore I gave a list on the thread in VA but the cache is returning nothing. I totally posted one which means Moses didn't put it in the first post! You're awful, Moses!

Watchmen
Red Son
Batman: Killing Joke
Sin City(I care not that it's not one book)
Nemesis
Secret Wars(Nick Fury)

Took out V For Vendetta, Dark Knight Returns and Year One because it's been so long since I've read them that I can't place them. I need a read through of them again. I've also got Born Again and Swamp Thing Volume 1 that I need to read, I've heard good things.

Yeah, they all are a little dated.

I did modify it once or twice on the EBB, and then just modified mine slightly when I posted this here.

As usual, I pick things up by whim and I'm going to go get one of the Walking Dead trades. How close is it to the show? Was watching Talking Dead last night and the actress who plays Maggie said the show diverges from the book at points, so it makes the books still enjoyable and different enough not to ruin each other.

I haven't read the books. Zombies have never been my bag, but a buddy of mine watched the first season and then read all the trades and said they were awesome and that things didn't translate exactly to the show in places so both were great together or separately.

I dunno, apart from the fact that the tv show is a drama and that aspect doesn't really come across in the comics then I'd say they're following it pretty much.

I don't think the comic and the show are much alike at all. Some of the same characters, some of the same places, some of the same events, but they're all told differently enough and in a different structure that they both come across as completely original for the most part.

I'm reading the X-Men Schism trade right now as well as hack/Slash vol 2. I bought a bunch of cheap trades at Megacon a few weeks back that I have to get through too.

I wasn't a huge fan of Schism. Mind you I don't recall a bunch of it. It was pretty lackluster overall from what I do recall.

Also, I just realized the MGH I meant to stand for "Mafia Gathering Hole" edition could easily be mistaken by comic fans as the "Mutant Growth Hormone" edition.

I'm feeling the same way so far. Honestly it seems like the book was just made so they could set up regenesis and have Wolverine and the X-Men which is fine by me since all the issues of that series I've read have been great. It really did shake things up with the X-Men which was definitely needed.

No, but come back Bill!

Surely you must have a passing interest of some kind with comics?

Anything you've considered reading or used to read in the past?

Curious about any of them or even digital versions and such?

I wasn't a huge fan of Schism. Mind you I don't recall a bunch of it. It was pretty lackluster overall from what I do recall.

Also, I just realized the MGH I meant to stand for "Mafia Gathering Hole" edition could easily be mistaken by comic fans as the "Mutant Growth Hormone" edition.

Oops

I'm feeling the same way so far. Honestly it seems like the book was just made so they could set up regenesis and have Wolverine and the X-Men which is fine by me since all the issues of that series I've read have been great. It really did shake things up with the X-Men which was definitely needed.

Yeah, basically it did what the title suggested would happen. It just didn't get there in an overly entertaining or memorable way.

I've taken to reading alot in digital format, but in sizeable chunks instead of monthly. So, I'm almost to the point where I'll go get the first arc or two of Wolverine and the X-Men.

What are the existing X-Men titles now besides Uncanny X-Force and X-Factor?

I know Uncanny X-Men is Cyclops' book but that's all I know. Wolverine still has like sixty titles though.

So...this isn't the Walking Dead thread?

So sorry.

No, but come back Bill!

Surely you must have a passing interest of some kind with comics?

Anything you've considered reading or used to read in the past?

Curious about any of them or even digital versions and such?

I've read Watchmen and V for Vendetta. I really like Alan Moore. What else should I read by him? From Hell?

Never read comics regularly as a kid. I was always more into sci-fi and fantasy. Apart from books I always read StarLog magazine from cover to cover. Occasionally Fangoria and other movie related magazines, depending on the cover story.

Oh, and Dr. Who. Read all the Dr. Who books and even still own the Marvel Premiere issues of the Dr. Who stories.

And Douglas Adams.

I read the first and third Walking Dead trade paperbacks. (My library didn't have the 2nd. But I stopped there (for now).

And I've been checking out some graphic novels from the library as well. Can't remember any titles off the top of my head, though.

Poppy's 1st X-Men game got me excited about comics, though. I enjoyed everything I read researching stuff. But then I became overwhelmed about where to start reading. There's a lot of stuff out there. And, having lurked occasionally in the comics threads (and being a regularly reader of the mafia planning threads!), I know all of it is not good.

I'll probably check out the Dark Knight Returns next and then Sandman.

Batman: The Killing Joke is amazing, although it's pretty dark(I guess that's to be expected from Alan Moore).

The darker the better. And giving the finger to the powers that be is a bonus.

You like dark and twisted, but with an awesome bang and story to go with it?

Preacher - I can't do it justice with a description.
The Boys - Who keeps the supes in check? Especially when the supes of your world are all perverted, abusive, destructive, self obsessed murders and their public personas are all a lie?

Irredeemable
Incorruptible to a lesser extent

The first two fit your bill perfectly. I throw in Irredeemable for the fact he's the world's first and foremost Super hero...until he snaps. He destroys a city equivalent to New York and Sinks a small, relatively unknown island in the pacific (I lie, it's well know, but dude makes an entire island disappear).
Incorruptible is the opposite perspective. One of Irredeemable's bigger villains, Max Damage, sees all this go down (the destruction of a New York like city he sees first hand) and it changes him. He can no longer be that guy he was, if there is noone to check the Plutonian.

The End League might be something you're interested in too, but it's only two trades long and it's been awhile since I read them.

Invincible. Everything I've tried to write about it comes off wrong. Just grab the Invincible Ultimate Collection Volume 1 and I GUARANTEE you will not be disappointed. See, I'm serious. I underlined it AND put it in italics.

Preacher is pretty good.

The Boys is written by Gareth Ennis(right?) so it's bound to be good.

Yeah, you definately want to read those in order.

Preacher goes to 10 in softcover trades.

Invincible Ultimate Collection is on #7 now. So 15 or 16 softcover trades now.

The Boys are up to vol. 10 in softcover and the Definitive editions (1 - 3) take you to volume 6 in the softcovers.

They're divided into "Team Wolverine" (Westchester) or "Team Cyclops" (Utopia).

Wolverine:
1. Wolverine and the X-Men (GREAT!)
2. X-Men Legacy (This is basically Rogue's book; last I looked, they were doing an arc about Exodus. I haven't read this book for the past 6 or so issues.)
3. X-Force (Was fun, but Otherworld is boring.)

Cyclops:
1. Uncanny X-Men (Meh so far.)
2. X-Men (Last I looked, they were doing the fallout of Jubilee becoming a vampire. I haven't read this in about 6 issues, either.)
3. Generation Hope (Enjoyable.)
4. New Mutants (Haven't read it since the first arc.)
5. X-Club (A lot of non-typical X-Men fun.)
6. Astonishing X-Men (Never read it, I just saw it included in the list.)

Impartial:
1. X-Factor (Great book. If I had to assign, I'd say they're Team Wolverine just becasue he's shown up in that book since the Schism.)

You can get them on the Fire, mainly DC as I believe marvel is tied to some other distribution system/company (B&N maybe?) but I don't recall seeing any marvel.

Please tell me they're not actually using the "Team [character name" template? Fucking Twilight has spread that shit(AFAIK) and it's horrendous.

Nobody ever says "Team Wolverine" or "Team Cyclops" but they do split the group pretty evenly (although Cyclops seems to have gotten a bit more and honestly probably has the best group even though his book is shit).

Just read the Wolverine books and hope that Colossus comes to his senses and switches over to Wolverine's side.

They don't say "Team ____" in the books, but they're advertised that way in the ads in the back of the issues.
